UK Travel Advisory: Kenya’s Terrorism Risks in 6 Areas

Thursday, June 22nd, the United Kingdom Government updated its travel advisory. For British citizens planning a trip to Kenya, focusing primarily on terrorism risks in six areas.

In a statement, non-essential travel to Mandera County (excluding Mandera West sub-county) and Lamu County (excluding Lamu Island and Manda Island) was discouraged for British nationals.

The list also included the eastern portion of Garissa County, portions of Tana River County. Sixty kilometers of the Kenya-Somalia border, and areas near Tana River.

“The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) discourages all but essential travel within 15 kilometers of the coast from the Tana River to the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki) River,” reads a portion of the statement.

Terrorist attacks and kidnappings were cited as potential incidents to which the foreigners were alerted.

Additionally, the United Kingdom warned its citizens about the resurgence of opposition protests.

“In the past, police and demonstrators clashed during demonstrations in Kenya. Avoid political demonstrations and gatherings.

“Protests can occur in various locations. Be aware of media coverage and leave the area if you observe a large crowd. On these days, some businesses and schools may be closed,” the statement reads in part.

The travel advisory was updated hours after Azimio la Umoja announced that a rally would be held on June 27 at Kamkunji Grounds.

After the passage of the Finance Bill 2023 and the reading of the 2023/24 Budget Estimates, the opposition indicated that they would consult with their supporters on the way forward.

“We also learned the hard way that this illegitimate regime can disregard the people, their emotions, fears, circumstances, hopes, and aspirations to impose its agenda.

Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza supporters accomplished this with the passage of the Finance Bill of 2023. Part of the statement read, “Ignoring the wishes of the majority of Kenyans heralds the era of dictatorship.”
