Deputy President Gachagua Challenges Politicians: Strike for Salary Raise

Vice President Rigathi Gachagua dared politicians seeking a pay raise to strike on Thursday, June 22.

Gachagua stated, shortly after confirming the disbursement of Ksh16 billion in Inua Jamii funds, that he was also surviving on his salary, as the government continues to deal with a cash crunch that affects salary payments.

Additionally, Gachagua dared the leaders to shut down the counties if they deemed it necessary. At least 15 counties had ceased operations due to national government funding delays.

“We have no available funds. He remarked, “They can put sufurias on your head and throw other tantrums, but we have no money to give them.”

Further, Gachagua urged them to be content with their salaries and serve the people, as they had volunteered for the positions.

“You cannot run for a seat knowing the salary and then request a raise after you’ve been elected.” If you wish to work in my office, you are welcome to do so, but there is no money available,” he added.

The second-in-command advised the politicians not to expect a salary increase from the government, adding that the priority was to pay the elderly.

He explained that the funds, currently managed by the government, were intended for development projects such as road construction and fertilizer distribution.

    MCAs Confront the SRC

Lyn Cherop, chairman of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), proposed a salary increase for members of the County Assembly (MCA) and county speakers on June 14.

According to the SRC, the salaries of MCAs will increase by Ksh10,000, from Ksh154,488 to Ksh164,588.

The MCA threatened a strike on June 17, arguing that the proposed raise was insufficient, and gave the SRC one week to revise the proposal and increase the raise or face a strike.

“County Assemblies were not involved in the review of salaries. It is void and invalid. Philemon Sabulei, chairman of the County Assemblies Forum and member of the county assembly for Elgeyo Marakwet, stated that the SRC must consider the welfare of county assemblies.
