Upon announcing the payment, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua expressed regret that the government was unable to make payments within eight months.

Over one million Kenyans enrolled in the Inua Jamii Program will benefit from the Ksh16 billion, as he explained.

The expected beneficiaries are orphans, senior citizens, and Kenyans with severe disabilities.

“The Kenya Kwanza administration remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable members of the community who deserve to live a dignified life,” the DP said at the event held at his Karen home.

Despite the eight-month delay, Gachagua assured recipients that the government would provide a monthly stipend moving forward.

The DP announced that beneficiaries of the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE) complimentary program would receive an additional Ksh11 million as a supplement.

“Each recipient will receive Ksh16,000 in two installments in June and July,” he explained.

Gachagua announced that while Inua Jamii beneficiaries are dispersed across the country, NICHE is intended for Kenyans in Arid and Semi-Arid Counties Kitui, Kilifi, Marsabit, Turkana, and West Pokot who are vulnerable.

Each recipient in these counties would receive an additional Ksh4,000 in addition to the Inua Jamii allowance. Beneficiaries of the NICHE program include expectant mothers and mothers with young children.

Since September 2022, when it took over from the previous administration, the government of President William Ruto has been heavily criticized for failing to release funds for the elderly.

In the fiscal year 2023/2024, the government reduced Inua Jamii’s budget from Ksh39.5 billion to Ksh38.2 billion.
