Breathtaking Birth: SGR Staff and Doctor Facilitate Mid-Journey Delivery

A passenger traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa on the Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) on June 21 gave birth to a baby girl.

Kenya Railways noted in a statement that a pregnant passenger gave birth on board with the assistance of a volunteer doctor and an attendant.

“We are thrilled to share the story of a mother who welcomed her child aboard the Madaraka Express Passenger Service train bound for Mombasa.

“We were fortunate to have Dr. Indanyenyi Luseso onboard, who assisted our Passenger Attendant, Mary Nyiha, in performing the delivery,” the statement read in part.

Kenya Railways reported that the mother was rushed to Mariakani Hospital for additional medical care following delivery.

“She was then rushed to the Mariakani Sub-County Hospital for additional medical care. The mother and child are both healthy, the statement added.

In a separate incident on May 23, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) tracked down and honored a matatu driver and his tout for rerouting their matatu to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to safely deliver a passenger.

In addition, their Sacco presented them with mobile phones and other unspecified gifts for their altruistic act.

Dido Guyatu, head of communications for the NTSA, stated, “Their actions exemplified all the qualities of servant leadership and exhibited the highest level of compassion.”

The driver narrated that the woman boarded the matatu earlier in the day at the Kenya Railways station and then appeared ill, alarming the other passengers.

When the driver and tout realized that the woman’s pain was worsening, they alerted police officers along the route to assist in clearing the road, allowing them to get her to the hospital in time.
