Political Party Dispute Tribunal Halts Kanini Kega-led Faction, Grants Reprieve to Jeremiah Kioni-led Jubilee Party

It is a reprieve for Jeremiah Kioni’s faction of the Jubilee Party after the Political Party Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) issued orders prohibiting Kanini Kega’s faction from holding any meetings.

In the complaint filed by Jeremiah Kioni, David Murathe, and Kagwe Gichohi, the Jubilee party asserts that the Kanini Kega faction has disregarded earlier court directives to maintain the status quo and that no one other than Kioni is authorized to issue statements on behalf of the party.

“……interim conservatory orders are hereby issued restraining all parties hereto and/or their representatives jointly and severally from issuing any communication and/or making any public representations on behalf of Jubilee party, and further staying communication dated 6th and 13th June 2023 issued by the 3rd Respondent and any other communication and/or decisions that may have been issued and/or taken by any of the parties hereto on behalf of Jubilee party during the period of the interim conservatory orders

In addition, the petitioners claimed the respondents issued two notices requesting the party’s withdrawal from the Azimio Coalition and the convening of a special National Delegates Convention (NDC).

According to them, the two notices are weighty decisions with far-reaching implications for the party, and it is, therefore, necessary to await court decisions on whether the Kega faction has the authority to issue the notices.

The papers state, “The respondent’s conduct is therefore manifestly a deliberate attempt to undermine the orders and authority and to defeat the basis of the disputes before the tribunal.”

On 13 June, Kega’s faction sent a letter to the One Kenya Coalition Party, Azimio la Umoja, requesting removal from the coalition’s Deed of Agreement.

During a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 6, 2023, the faction announced its decision to withdraw from Azimio.
