Government Vehicle Sparks Controversy After Being Spotted Outside Nightclub
On Saturday, June 17, a photograph of a vehicle belonging to a government parastatal allegedly parked in front of a nightclub elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.
The vehicle’s license plates were blue, the color the Registrar of Motor Vehicles assigns to non-profit organizations.
Kenyans questioned the official’s personal use of a government vehicle.
Please, parastatal executives, stop misusing taxpayer funds. Going to a bar in this vehicle is not only an abuse of office but also an insult to the taxpayers, as one person stated.
Some citizens have complained about other government officials who use bright lights and loud sirens while driving.
“Doesn’t the National Police Service (NPS) have a specialized unit within the Department of Traffic for these government vehicles? Send them away and confiscate this vehicle immediately from whoever is misusing it, a person complained.

Some defended the official, arguing that he may have discovered the parking lot closed for the night.
“This was likely the driver taking a break after dropping off the boss,” said one observer.
What if he had a long day and was taking a break? another inquired.
A portion of Kenyans identified other locations where government officials casually parked their vehicles after the allotted time. On Kiambu Road, they noted, are a number of these notorious motorists.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the Government Vehicle Check Unit (GVCU) is responsible for addressing officials who misuse government vehicles.
The unit is responsible for ensuring that all government vehicles are used exclusively for government business.
Other responsibilities include generating revenue through surcharges, enforcing traffic laws regarding government vehicles, preventing misuse of government vehicles, and ensuring that the GK vehicle service serves the public as the government intended.
On parastatals, the unit ensures that the vehicles are driven at all times by experienced, high-quality drivers.
It has the authority to seize and impound any vehicle that violates the law and transport it to the nearest police station for payment of a surcharge.
