Uganda Wrangles Spark Lawsuit Threat Against Ruto

As tensions between Kenya and Uganda escalate following the dairy milk ban, the East African Business Council (EABC) has threatened to sue Kenya in the East African Court of Justice.

John Bosco Kalisa, the chief executive officer of the EABC, argued to the press on Saturday, June 17 that Kenya had violated the East African Community Common Market protocol.

He provided two options for resolving the issue: bilateral talks between Presidents William Ruto and Yoweri Museveni, or bringing the matter to court.

“We can utilize bilateral engagements, but if they fail, we can bring the matter before the East African Court of Justice.” “They have the capacity and competence to address such issues,” said Kalisa.

According to the CEO, there should be no restrictions on the trade of goods between the two countries to stimulate the economy.

In March 2023, the Kenya Dairy Board temporarily suspended the importation of milk powder from Uganda.

“In anticipation of prolonged rainfall, the government has halted milk powder imports to protect the industry from surplus production and low producer prices,” the board reported.

In addition, Kenya restricted the number of milk import permits issued to Ugandan farmers.

The move resulted in losses for Uganda, which produces approximately 3,2 billion liters of milk annually. Officials urged the two heads of state to resolve the issue for the mutual benefit of both nations.

Despite the ban, Senator Karungo Thang’wa of Kiambu complained on Thursday, June 15, that foreign markets have flooded the market, displacing Kenyan farmers.

Thang’wa, while appearing before the Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialisation, and Tourism, urged the committee to establish measures that will guarantee farmers a minimum price for milk sales.

Before Kenya implemented the ban, Uganda supplied Kenya with approximately 700 million liters of milk annually.
