DCI’s Ingenious Tactics Crack 7-Year Mozambique Terror Case
The Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), headquartered within the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), assisted Mozambique in resolving a complex terror case that had plagued the nation since 2017.
The specialized unit relocated to Mozambique in response to a request from the southern African nation, which had fought terrorism for nearly seven years.
ATPU officers silenced the guns in Mozambique with the aid of modern training and equipment, restoring stability and economic recovery.
After meeting with the Attorney General of Mozambique in Nairobi, ATPU Director Johnstone Kola attributed the mission’s success to the processing and preservation of evidence before its presentation in court.
“The proper training, tools, and equipment of the anti-terror unit gave our officers the upper hand against the enemy,” Kola stated. “Processing and preserving evidence before its production in court was also crucial to ensuring that terror suspects suffered the consequences of their actions.”
Mohamed Amin, director of criminal investigations, attributed the success to the close collaboration with Mozambican security officers, which helped flush out extremist groups.
“Initially, our agencies operated in silos, which gave criminal networks an unfair advantage by exploiting the existing gaps,” Amin explained.

The Attorney General of Mozambique applauded the security operation and confirmed that her country was in the final stages of implementing tactics employed by Kenyan security forces.
Mozambique is considering constructing a facility similar to the DCI National Forensic Laboratory, she revealed. The facility’s duties include identifying, seizing, and analyzing all cybercrime-related electronic devices.
“The Mozambican delegation, which included the country’s ambassador to Kenya, Ambassador Jeronimo Chivavi, and other dignitaries, is also expected to visit the DCI National Forensic Laboratory and the ATPU headquarters to gain a better understanding of our operations,” read a portion of a DCI statement.
In addition to Mozambique, DCI has assisted in resolving complex cases in Seychelles. On Monday, May 23, 2022, the agency’s Forensic Ballistics Lab and Bomb Disposal and Hazardous Materials unit were contracted to assist the island in resolving a firearm-related case.
“Since the successful launch of the DCI-National Forensic Laboratory, the facility has proven to be an effective tool for solving complex crimes, not only in Kenya but throughout the region.
“In response to a request from the government of Seychelles, experts from our Forensic Ballistics lab and Bomb Disposal and Hazardous materials unit are currently on international assignment in Seychelles,” reads a portion of the statement.
