Unprecedented Move: Government Announces Partial Shutdown of Mombasa Road & Lang’ata Road

On Saturday, June 17, motorists using Lang’ata Road were warned to expect traffic disruptions, so they should plan to use alternate routes to enter the city.

Thursday, June 15th, Karen Hospital announced in a press release that it had obtained permission to temporarily close a portion of Lang’ata Road at 7:15 a.m.

According to the notice, the closure would affect one side of the road, specifically from Carnivore Grounds to Nyayo Stadium. This section also serves users of Mombasa Road.

The closure was necessitated by the 2023 Karen Hospital Heart Run, a worthy effort to raise funds for heart surgeries for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Therefore, motorists intending to access Lang’ata Road were instructed to use the Southern Bypass along Mombasa Road.

South C Fly Over will impact traffic on Mai Mahiu Road, Muhoho Avenue, Kiganjo Avenue, and a portion of Mombasa Road.”Drivers wishing to access Lang’ata Road should use the Southern Bypass and exit at Ole Sereni,” the Karen Hospital instructed.

Following the conclusion of the race, the section of Lang’ata Road between Carnivore Grounds and Nyayo Stadium will reopen to facilitate the return of normal traffic flow.

The Heart Run initiative at Karen Hospital was created in response to the rising prevalence of heart diseases, particularly among children, and the associated high treatment costs.

In addition to organizing running events, the foundation also organizes derbies and galas to raise awareness and encourage Kenyans to support vulnerable children.

The initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s plan to provide Kenyans with access to affordable healthcare.

Ruto has directed his attention to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) as part of the implemented reforms, emphasizing the need to strengthen and empower the agency to provide quality healthcare.

“Many workers fall ill or are injured frequently, and the high costs of these occurrences can trap them in poverty despite their hard work.

Ruto stated during Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1: “To relieve workers of the burden of medical expenses, the government has taken steps to implement a universal health cover that will keep the cost of treatment separate from workers’ wages.”
