Police Caught Red-Handed: Two Arrested for Extorting Ksh15,000 in Just 2 Hours on Outering Road

On Wednesday, June 14, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four traffic police officers accused of extorting motorists along Nairobi’s Outering Road.

In a statement, EACC reported that the four traffic police officers had amassed a total of Ksh15,820 when EACC investigators apprehended them.

“Before the arrest, the four traffic officers had collected a total of Ksh 15,820 in less than two hours. The majority of the currency consisted of 50, 100, and 200 note denominations, according to an EACC statement.

After receiving numerous complaints from motorists and commuters using the busy highway, the detectives arrested the four individuals.

“EACC undertook this operation in response to numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public alleging that traffic police officers have been openly accepting bribes from private and public service vehicles,” the statement continued.

According to the commission, some drivers had devised inventive methods of handing over the money to traffic police officers, such as placing notes on strategic exterior locations of the vehicle, such as door handles.

Other motorists left cash on the road for officers to collect.

In extreme circumstances, some drivers concealed cash within their driver’s licenses before handing them to traffic officers for inspection.

Other commuters attributed the frequent traffic jams on the busy road to officers stopping drivers to collect bribes.

The suspects were interrogated at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station before their release.

The commission explained, “They were later released on police bail of Ksh10,000 each pending the completion of the remaining aspects of the investigation, including obtaining the Director of Public Prosecutions’ approval of the recommendation to arraign them before the Anti-Corruption Court.”

Therefore, the commission emphasized that the police officers risk suspension if the DPP approves their prosecution by the law.

The arrests occurred at a time when the commission had intensified its fight against corruption throughout the country, which is one of President William Ruto’s priorities.
