Ruto Reveals Unconventional Move: Former NIS Boss Philip Kameru’s Extended Stay Explained

President William Ruto revealed on Wednesday, June 14, that he requested former National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Major General Philip Kameru to continue serving in his position after his official term had ended.

Ruto elaborated during the swearing-in ceremony of the new NIS director, Noordin Haji, at State House, Nairobi, that he was in the process of establishing his government at the time and needed the support of the seasoned spymaster.

The president remarked that the Major General was gracious enough to remain in office, as his services were indispensable during the first nine months of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Ruto also noted that he has a cordial working relationship with the former NIS director, who was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to head the security portfolio in 2014.

Ruto specifically acknowledged the formidable obstacles that the former NIS director had faced, attributing them to the intensification of regional conflicts and the global threat of terrorism.

“When I requested that you (Kameru) stay until many things are put together, you graciously agreed, and I am incredibly appreciative.”I would like to thank Kameru for the exemplary service he has rendered to the Kenyan people. “Having worked with him, I can attest to his diligence and dedication,” he said.

In addition, Ruto alluded to a possible future appointment of the military officer, noting that the government could still benefit from his expertise in a variety of government agencies.

“As I informed you, the government will seek assistance from senior citizens like yourself. “Your experience in government is valuable,” he emphasized.

On May 16, Ruto nominated Noordin Haji, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, to succeed Kameru.
The day after the National Assembly unanimously approved Haji’s nomination, he took the oath of office.

Ruto expressed his confidence in Haji, stating that he believed the newly appointed spy chief would effectively utilize his expertise and network to fulfill his duties.

“I have complete faith in your experience, having worked in NIS and other high-level government positions such as DPP. I am confident that you have acquired relevant experience.

“Our global economic situation requires a great deal of delicacy in management. I look forward to collaborating with you and your colleagues,” he said.
