On Monday, Nelson Koech, a member of parliament from Belgut, was questioned for over three hours about the invasion, arson, and destruction of property valued at Ksh 190 million at multinational tea farms in Kericho.

The legislator joins the list of leaders questioned at the Rift Valley Regional DCI Headquarters in Nakuru. Others questioned include Governor Dr. Eric Mutai of Kericho, MP Benjamin Langat of Ainamoi, and MCA Paul Chirchir of Kapsoit.

In the past two weeks, five WhatsApp administrators and two locals with ties to the destruction were also questioned.

Koech stated that he recorded a statement of what he knew in response to the summons he received on June 8, 2023.

According to Koech, the security agency urged him to preach peace and allow police to continue their investigations.

Since the matter was under investigation, the representative stated he could not disclose what he recorded at the DCI.

He condemned the arson, theft, and destruction of machines and electronic equipment that occurred at the multinational tea farms, stating that youths should use alternative means to resolve their conflicts.

He insisted that a balance must be struck between creating jobs for the citizens of Kericho. And increasing the use of machines to boost productivity and efficiency.

Koech criticized the elders who want the companies to relinquish control of the tea farms to the locals.

Regarding the destruction, MCA Chirchir has been charged in court thus far. As police investigate him, he is free on a Ksh 1,000,000 bond.

On May 22, 23, and 24, 2023, an invasion occurred on tea farms in Brooke, resulting in a loss of Ksh 189,488,923.

Allegedly, the youths set fire to ten jumbo shades, eight-hand mechanical harvesters, self-propelled machines, a social hall, a weighbridge, a tractor, and a television.
