Motorists Unveil 5 Major Concerns Over NSA’s Digital Number Plates

The features and acquisition process of the National Transport and Safety Authority’s (NTSA) new digital number plates drew criticism from Kenyans online on Saturday, June 10.

A portion of the users lamented that the new number plate fonts were difficult to detect by parking scanners, causing delays at the exits.

Drivers noted that they were required to visit the parking office to rectify the error.

Robert Gitau observed that the misreading of new fonts by parking scanners at malls causes departure delays and the need to visit the parking office to correct the anomaly.

Others disclosed that they had to accompany mechanics as they replaced old license plates with new ones.

Nonetheless, several mechanics exploited this market niche by strategically positioning their businesses outside Huduma Centres to attract customers.

Some motorists also expressed concern that they had fallen victim to misleading reports because they had to pay additional fees to access the service.

On May 31, 2023, online rumors circulated that prices had increased by Ksh700, with drivers bemoaning the need to pay additional fees to access the service.

In a statement, NTSA denied the allegations and reiterated that prices remained at Ksh3,050.

Other drivers urged the NTSA to clarify the procedure for issuing the new reflective license plates. For instance, the majority of questions on the NTSA’s official page were from users who inquired about the procedure after uploading the documents incorrectly.

“I wish there were more clarity regarding the distribution of new generation license plates. George Kiptalam noted that some of us have been waiting since January 2023, resigned to the fact that it is not as simple as it seems.

Among the most dire situations is the delay in the process of acquiring new license plates, with several individuals lamenting that it took months to obtain the new plates.

Application Method

The NTSA outlined a nine-step procedure on their website, which includes visiting the Authority’s website and selecting vehicle registration.

Select the vehicle for which you wish to apply reflective number plates by clicking Apply for reflective number plates. Select your preferred method of communication with the NTSA, either text or email.

Choose either the square or the oblong format. To enable the new generation of license plates, upload the original logbooks, old font, and rear plates in PDF format.

Enter your National Identification Number (ID) and the collection location. The system will then prompt you to pay 3,050 Kenyan Shillings.

You will then receive a text message when the new generation license plate is ready. The acquisition of new license plates will take approximately seven business days.
