CS Mutua Commends Romania’s Bold Response: Recalling Ambassador to Kenya over Racist Monkey Slur

Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua praised the Romanian government on Sunday for recalling its envoy from Kenya for comparing African diplomats to apes.

According to a letter demanding an apology seen by CNN, Ambassador Dragos Tigau made the racist remarks when a monkey appeared at a window in the conference room during a meeting he was chairing.

In a tweet, CS Mutua described the incident as “shocking and despicable,” adding that he has since reached out to the African Group, the United Nations, and the Romanian government.

“I am grateful to the Romanian government for recalling its envoy to Nairobi after he made disparaging and racist comments about Africans and all Black people. Since this shocking and despicable occurrence, we have been in contact with the African Group, the United Nations, and the Romanian government, said Dr. Mutua.

“The envoy’s government has taken the only correct action possible. All African and black people will not tolerate the perpetuation of derogatory treatment that we have endured for centuries. Respect for all races and cultures is a necessity, not an option.”

Ambassador Tigau reportedly said, “The African Group has joined us” when a monkey appeared at the window, prompting African diplomats to threaten to walk out of meetings he attended.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it learned of the incident on June 8, even though it occurred at the end of April.

The Romanian foreign ministry stated in a statement that it hoped the isolated incident would not impact its “deep relations” with African nations.

The statement read, “The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets deeply this situation, extends its apologies to all those affected, and strongly rejects and condemns all behaviors and attitudes incompatible with mutual respect.”
