Government’s Ksh.11.1B Disbursement Brings Relief, Clears NHIF Pending Bills

The National Treasury has reportedly transferred Ksh.11.1 billion to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to settle hospitals’ outstanding bills.

The majority of hospitals in the country have banned the use of NHIF cards throughout their facilities due to the agency’s failure to pay outstanding bills totaling Ksh.20 billion.

This compelled Kenyans who relied on NHIF coverage to pay cash for medical services or forego them altogether.

The government’s disbursement of Ksh.11.1 billion means that NHIF still owes hospitals across the country approximately Ksh.8.9 billion.

Chris Kiptoo, principal of the National Treasury, stated in newsrooms on Saturday stating that the exchequer “is keen on clearing pending bills promptly to ensure that the various government departments function optimally.”

In an earlier statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha Wafula praised the National Treasury for expediting payments owed to the state agency.

Saturday on Twitter, CS Nakhumicha praised the exchequer for acting expeditiously and resolving the issue.

She stated, “I would like to thank the National Treasury for timely remitting funds to NHIF to enable the settlement of claims by various service providers nationwide.”

The CS added that NHIF will settle the outstanding hospital bills in a prudent and accountable manner, effective immediately.

“Therefore, all claims will be thoroughly vetted before settlement so that we can utilize the available resources as efficiently as possible,” Nakhumicha added.

“While disbursements continue, I would like to request that all facilities resume service to Kenyans. The Ministry remains committed to the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) pledge and will ensure that the NHIF executes its mandate with the utmost objectivity, transparency, and excellence to fulfill the Afya Mashinani promise.”
