Siaya MCAs Unanimously Vote to Impeach Deputy Governor William Oduol

After hours of deliberation, the Siaya County Assembly impeached Deputy Governor William Oduol on Thursday, June 8.

The DG was sent home after 42 MCAs approved a report accusing him of abuse of office and Constitutional violations.

In the findings presented to the county assembly on May 29, Oduol was accused, among other things, of spending Ksh1 million on his office chair.

After assuming the position, he reportedly ordered that his office be renovated and all furniture be replaced.

The report, which labeled him dishonest, indicated that a total of Ksh11 million in taxpayer funds were invested in the project.

The special committee also accused him of pressuring junior employees, primarily in procurement departments, to award contracts to particular individuals.

The impeachment occurred less than two weeks after his official expulsion from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, of which his boss James Orengo is a life member.

By cooperating with the governing Kenyan Kwanza Coalition, Oduol, according to the ODM’s principal organ, impeded the Governor’s progress.

“The Siaya ODM committee has unanimously decided that William Oduol must resign as DG because he no longer shares the party’s ideals and aspirations.

“This meeting also resolved that he be expelled, and his ODM membership is hereby revoked,” stated an ODM statement at the time.

    What Now?

The speaker of the Siaya County Assembly must then inform Senate Speaker Amason Kingi of the impeachment motion in writing within two days.

Then, Kingi will convene a Senate meeting to hear the allegations against Oduol and form a committee to conduct an investigation.

In ten days, the committee presents its findings to the Senate and invites the DG to defend himself. If there is evidence against the allegations, the Senate will vote to impeach him. If a majority votes to impeach him, Oduol immediately resigns from office.
