Acrimony Escalates: Calls Mount for Panyako’s Resignation from Nurses Union Amid Rift with Ruto
Alfred Obengo, a registered nurse, criticized Seth Panyako for using his position as Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) to negotiate for political power.
Obengo lamented in a phone call to GossipA2Z on Thursday, June 1, that Panyako was running a briefcase union as nurses left the union.
“Good riddance! Tumechoka na yeye! (We are tired of him!) “He has been the union’s SG without an election for years. Obengo, the former president of the National Nurses Association of Kenya, bemoaned, “He has used this union to further his interests.”
In addition, Obengo stated that it was time for Panyako, former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) vice-vice chairman, to stop using the nurses’ union to advance his political agenda.
“Panyako is an absolute disgrace to our profession. When he traveled to Ruto, he did not consult with us. Now that the transaction has failed, he has returned.
“Nurses are quitting that union en-masse. They have had enough of his rhetoric and antics,” Obengo continued.
Panyako was unavailable for comment when contacted.

Panyako and Ruto
The union leader resigned as vice chairman of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 27, in opposition to the proposed 3 percent housing levy in the Finance Bill 2023.
“After speaking with the President, it was determined that my opposition to the housing levy and the cost of living precluded me from continuing to lead the UDA party,” Panyako stated.
In addition, he claimed that President William Ruto was surrounded by six men who controlled government appointments.
“Initially, we would discuss and plan with the then-vice president. He would call me frequently, even once a week, and occasionally twice or three times a day.
“As soon as he took office, he stopped taking my calls,” lamented Panyako.
However, reports indicated that Panyako was dissatisfied with her inability to obtain a key government position. Ruto’s failure to recognize him as a prominent politician in Western Kenya also irritated him.
In a rebuttal, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala dismissed Panyako’s resignation by pointing out that he held no office in the ruling party.
