IPOA Initiates Investigation Following Fatal Raid at Migori Police Station Resulting in Six Casualties
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). Has initiated an investigation after six people were shot dead on Thursday evening. When an unruly mob stormed the Isebania Police Station in Migori.
According to the incident report. The mob arrived at the police station in a pickup truck while brandishing machetes and rocks.
“They shattered the windows of the station armory, the OCS office, and other offices with stones. They began destroying the cell gates while demanding the release of all prisoners,” the report stated in part.
The police were forced to use live ammunition after the group overran the report office. And armory and headed for the cells, ostensibly to liberate the prisoners.
In a statement released to newsrooms on Saturday. IPOA reported that during the dramatic raid, six people were shot to death. And several others, including a police officer, were severely injured.

“On Thursday evening, May 25, 2023, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority learned of a shooting incident at the Isebania Police Station in Kuria West Sub-County in which six people were reportedly fatally wounded and others were injured. Police officers are among the injured, said IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori in a statement.
“The incident allegedly occurred as officers from the Isebania Police Station attempted to restore peace through a public order management operation.”
The authority stated that it has launched an investigation into the shootings. And will recommend prosecution for any police officers found to have abused their firearms.
“Yesterday morning, our regional office in Kisumu initiated the deployment of a Rapid Response Team to investigate the deaths and injuries,” the statement continued.
“Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable.”
