Unprecedented: Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga’s Backers Hit by Tear Gas at DCI HQ

The police fired tear gas to disperse Maina Njenga supporters who were chanting slogans in front of the DCI headquarters.

Maina Njenga remained ensconced within the premises while detectives interrogated him about a firearm and bhang allegedly seized at his residence.

Marth Karua, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, and George Wajackoyah were among the Azimio leaders who accompanied Maina Njenga to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Kiambu Road on May 25.

Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament (MP) Jeremiah Kioni were also present.

According to videos obtained by GossipA2Z, a large crowd of supporters greeted the former Mungiki leader and his entourage as they arrived.

Ndegwa Njiru, Njenga’s attorney, walked side by side with his client.

As their vehicles were prohibited from entering the DCI headquarters, Njenga and his crew were forced to park outside and enter on foot.

Calvince Okoth, alias Gaucho, a staunch supporter of the Azimio coalition, attempted to enter the DCI minutes after their entry but was denied entry.

A Nakuru court ordered Njenga to report to the DCI offices, so he did.

There were reports that the leader of the Azimio party, Raila Odinga, would appear in support of a close ally, Njenga.

On March 7, Prime Minister Raila Odinga was denied access to the DCI during the interrogation of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

Njenga appeared at the Nakuru Law Courts on Wednesday, May 24, where he was ordered to appear at the DCI headquarters following an anticipatory bail application he filed on May 19 at the Nairobi High Court.

The DCI conducted three raids on the former sect leader’s homes in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia counties on May 12.

The DCI reported that they found two firearms and ninety rolls of marijuana on his property.

According to documents obtained by GossipA2Z, the police also accused him of belonging to a criminal organization.

When the late John Michuki was in charge of security during the administration of Mwai Kibaki, Maina was the leader of the Mungiki.
