Raila: Kenya Kwanza’s Shady Reputation Hinders Handshake Potential

On Monday, opposition leader Raila Odinga described the government of President William Ruto as “too shady” for him to enter into a political truce similar to the one he signed with former president Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9, 2018.

Raila stated at the Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference (NDC) convened by Kenyatta at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi that he agreed to bipartisan discussions because he did not want a ‘handshake’ with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

โ€œKenya Kwanza should stop losing sleep over an imaginary handshake. Kenya Kwanza is too shady to be embraced, and that is why we have decided to give dialogue a chance,โ€ the former prime minister, whom Kenyatta had picked as his preferred successor said.

โ€œWe embraced the talks to secure a good deal for Kenyans and if the deal will not be forthcoming, Kenyans can be sure will not pursue vain dialogue.โ€

Odinga refused to concede defeat to Dr. Ruto in the August 2022 presidential election and began anti-government demonstrations in March.

On April 2, he called off the protests after President Ruto invited him to bipartisan parliamentary discussions to address their grievances.
