Kanini Kega Takes a Stand: Defying Uhuru’s Expulsion

On Monday, May 22, East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker Kanini Kega announced that disciplinary action would be taken against former president Uhuru Kenyatta for expelling ten party members.

Kega stated during a press briefing that disciplinary action would be determined by the party’s internal dispute resolution committee, after which the National Executive Council (NEC) would convene a meeting.

The lawmaker referred to Uhuru’s meeting as a mere ‘political rally’ and stated that the party would convene a proper National Delegates Convention (NDC) no later than July 15, 2023.

“The party will not hesitate to take additional disciplinary action against our party leader to restore its dignity and maintain its rightful position in the nation. We will await the conclusion of the Internal Committee’s investigation into the dispute before the NEC convenes to carry out its mandate regarding the convening of the NDC.”

“We anticipate a formal NDC to be held no later than July 15, 2023,” he said.

He voiced his displeasure with Uhuru’s behavior and questioned why he defied a legitimate body by violating the party’s constitution.

“It is regrettable that the former president chose to be on the wrong side of history by defying a legitimate party organ’s decision and resigned as party leader on March 14, 2023.

“He lacks authority to call or preside over meetings. Such impunity is unacceptable and tarnishes the Office of the Retired President’s reputation, he stated.

As Uhuru’s NDC meeting was not properly convened by Jubilee’s regulations, he affirmed to the Jubilee members that their positions were still valid.

“The members remain in office despite the political statements made at the meeting in question. “Additionally, you will recall that Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and Vice-chairman David Murathe were found guilty in the decision ratified by the NEC on 19 May 2023, effectively expelling them from the party,” he added.

During the NDC meeting held at Ngong Racecourse, Uhuru expelled ten disloyal party members for what he termed disloyalty.

Jimmy Angweny, Joshua Kutuny, Mutava Musyimi, Kega, Boniface Kinoti Gatobu, Naomi Shaban, and Nelson Dzuya were among these individuals.

Also terminated were Rachael Nyamaye, Advice Mundalo, Executive Director Wambui Gichuru, and Joel Kibe.

“Those who received the few positions Jubilee had to share now claim they will steer the party in the right direction. “No, their job is to stand firm and defend the Jubilee manifesto, or to step down and allow us to choose replacements,” Uhuru said.
