Uhuru’s Strategic Moves: Countering Ruto’s Government as Jubilee Meeting Approaches

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to move the upcoming Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference (NDC) from the Bomas of Kenya to the Ngong Racecourse was hailed as a strategy to avoid State interference in the activities of the party.

The Ngong racecourse is a private facility where only club members can approve admission, thwarting any attempts by the government to halt the race through the police.

In addition, the former president chose the venue after the party was denied access to the Bomas of Kenya and the indoor public gymnasium in Kasarani.

On Saturday, May 20, the Uhuru Kenyatta-led faction, led by the embattled Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni, met for a full day to discuss and plan for the NDC scheduled for Monday, May 22.

In addition, Kioni and David Murathe, the vice-chairman of Jubilee, threatened to petition the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to take action against the members who sat on the party’s internal disputes committees.

This is despite allegations that four LSK members were expelled from the party during a meeting presided over by Uhuru.

To thwart Uhuru’s NDC, nominated MP Hassan Osman petitioned the political parties’ Disputes Tribunal to declare the meeting illegal.

In a ruling issued on Friday, May 19, the Tribunal declined to block the move, indicating that the meeting would proceed.

The meeting, according to Uhuru, would deliberate and approve party policies. Consider a status report from the Nation Executive Council (NEC), and approve other matters discussed.

“Notice is hereby given that the Jubilee NDC has been relocated to the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi. All other information remains unchanged from the notice published on April 29, 2023,” the notice stated.

The Jubilee faction led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Kanini Kega. Expelled Kioni and Murathe from the party for gross misconduct and lack of respect for party organs.

“The charged members assume responsibilities that are clearly and expressly vested in other organs and party officials.

“He failed and neglected to carry his duties as directed by the party,” Kega stated on Friday, May 19.

Murathe had previously blamed President William Ruto for the internal strife within the former ruling party.

According to the Vice Chair and Uhuru’s ally, Ruto’s expulsion from the party made him bitter.

“Beware of deception. This conflict is not between Kioni and Kega. Someone is behind this because he is angry that we kicked him out of the Jubilee party and now that he is in power, he wants revenge. This is childish, murmured a visibly enraged Murathe.
