Kindiki’s Operation: Recovery of RPG & 96 Guns

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, aided by a multi-agency team, recovered a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) on Friday, May 19, as part of an operation in which residents of Samburu County turned over one of the largest shipments of firearms in recent months.

While on a tour of Samburu County, the CS confirmed that a total of 96 firearms had been surrendered.

“The government appreciates the Samburu County residents who have turned in 96 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition over the past few weeks.

The CS noted in a statement that the intelligence-led security operation will continue. Until all criminals are expelled from their hiding places.

In addition, Kindiki asserted that the government would continue to fight until all illegal firearms were recovered. And he thanked citizens for providing tips to security personnel.

“All firearms in the illegal possession of civilians must be recovered. He added that the multi-agency security team pursuing armed criminals and bandits in the North Rift Valley region will continue to collaborate with locals to identify and disarm criminals.

    Troubled Area

Kindiki declared six counties in the North Rift Valley region to be dangerous. And unstable for three months on March 12. This was necessary due to a rise in bandit and cattle rustler attacks.

Included were the counties of Samburu, Baringo, Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Laikipia.

At the time, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) assisted the National Police Service (NPS) in leading the operation.

Later, on May 17, the Chief of Staff extended the order. Noting that the multi-agency team had not yet expelled all bandits nor completely tranquilized the area.

“The orders I issued on March 12, 2023, declaring portions of the six counties of North Rift Valley to be disturbed and hazardous are hereby extended for an additional thirty days.

“I cannot provide a specific timeline for the operation’s conclusion, as it will end only when all bandits and armed criminals have been eliminated,” he said.
