Kindiki Orders Reopening of Kenya-Somalia Border: 3 Strategic Points Reestablished

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki announced on Monday, May 15 that Kenya would gradually open entry points to Somalia.

The CS explained that the exercise would take 90 days beginning immediately, thereby ending a decade-long border blockade.

Kindiki announced while hosting a high-level Somalian delegation led by the ministers of Internal Security, Defense, and Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, and Abshir Omar Jama.

“Among the commitments we have made is the signing of an outcome document that outlines our future course of action.

The CS stated, “We have agreed to reexamine the Visa procedure to reevaluate existing agreements enabling the free movement of our people.”

Kenya and Somalia are examining the possibility of a border at three key entry points, according to Kindiki.

“We have decided that the Kenya-Somalia border will be gradually reopened over the next 90 days, effective immediately,” he stated.

The first entry point to be opened will be the Mandera โ€“ Bula Hawa border within 30 days, as revealed by the secretary of the interior.

“Within sixty days, we will open the second border crossing, Liboi โ€“ Dhobley.

“And 90 days from today, we hope to open the last border point, which is Kiunga โ€“ Ras Kamboni in Lamu County,” Kindiki explained the process’s phased development.

Kithure revealed that in addition to the three entry points. The two governments were considering adding a fourth entry point in Wajir County.

Kindiki and his Somalian counterpart agreed to strengthen cross-border communication and the exchange of information between the two countries.

Kindiki stated, “We will also develop modalities for addressing cross-border challenges in recognition of the nature of transnational threats requiring a coordinated and comprehensive response by the two countries.”

Enhancing border infrastructure and management, as well as the operational capacity of border security. And law enforcement agencies to effectively respond to cross-border threats, were additional areas of agreement between the two leaders.
