Ruto-Raila Meetings to Tame Demonstrations, No Handshake: MP Koech
Nelson Koech, a representative from Belgut, has stated that President William Ruto’s recent public appearances with Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga should not imply that they will shake hands.
This comes after the two shared a podium at the funeral of Mukami Kimathi in Nyandarua county on Saturday and then attended the Kip Keino Classic finals at the Kasarani stadium.
On Sunday, the pair attended a match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium.
Monday on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show, MP Koech stated that the incidents should not be interpreted as a sign of a possible handshake between the government and opposition, arguing that President Ruto has always stated that such a handshake is impossible.
“First of all, he explained that he was attending the burial of Mukami, Dedan Kimathi’s wife, and it was a coincidence that Raila Odinga was also attending the same event,” said Koech. “I believe he elaborated on the fact that there wasn’t much to take away from their meeting.”
Therefore, the legislator urged Kenyans to temper their expectations and avoid misinterpreting the pair’s interactions.

MP Koech added that if there are to be any discussions, they cannot conclude with a handshake but must instead provide solutions to end the anti-government demonstrations.
“The populace must calm down and recognize that there are two leaders who have collaborated.” “We must debunk our politics and refrain from making it personal,” stated Koech.
“These individuals have known each other for a very long time, and if anything, their meeting will result in a reduction of protests. I believe it is reasonable for our economy.”
This is in light of President Ruto’s assertion that his willingness to engage in dialogue with Odinga is contingent on resolving the issues that led to the violent and disorderly anti-government demonstrations led by the Azimio opposition coalition.
“There will be no handshake, but there will be a discussion of the issues raised in parliament.” On April 4, he said during a visit to Kigali, Rwanda for the ninth session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperatives, “Those that parliament can resolve, it will resolve.”
