Govt Targets Pastor Ezekiel’s Licence, Gives 30-Day Deadline

Jane Joram, the Registrar of Societies, disclosed on May 10 that the agency had issued a 30-day notice of license cancellation to Pastor Ezekiel Odero’s New Life Church.

Joram, who testified before the Senate committee investigating the mass graves at Shakahola, stated that the pastor had been ordered to demonstrate why his license should not be revoked.

The registrar went on to explain that the pastors’ church would cease operations if officials were unable to persuade the government of its innocence regarding the allegations made against it.

Since its registration in 2012, the church had not filed tax returns, according to the government agency.

On the other hand, it was noted that the church was also the subject of cult-related investigations.

“We took the initiative to send cancellation notices to these churches due to the emergence of new activities.

“Since its registration, they have not complied with the requirements of the Societies Act, no returns have been filed, and we have issued them a notice to show cause,” stated Goretti Nyariki, the Deputy Registrar of Societies.

Also included in license cancellation plans were Paul Mackenzie’s Good News International ministries.

On the other hand, Attorney General Justin Muturi explained that his office did not act promptly. Because it lacked a location in Kilifi County.

The Registrar’s Office has offices in only fourteen regions. We would have noticed what was happening if we were in Kilifi,” he stated.

Notably, the government’s action occurred one day after Pastor Ezekiel was granted permission to enter the church by the courts.

In a ruling issued on May 8, the presiding judge of Mombasa, Olga Sewe. Ordered that the church be permitted to continue operations until the case is heard and decided.
