Kindiki Joins UK Govt in Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Wednesday, May 10, Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki announced the signing of the Kenya-UK Security Compact 2023.

During a joint press briefing with UK Security Minister Tom Tugendhat at Harambee House in Nairobi, the CS stated that Kenya is revamping its security sector to confront head-on the challenges posed by money laundering and terrorism.

“We have identified the need to strengthen the flow of illicit financial activities to combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and other illegal activities.

Kindiki stated, “We have also signed a letter of intent for cooperation between Kenya and the United Kingdom in the sharing of information regarding maritime security.”

Moreover, police officers will receive specialized training to address security issues.

“We have been able to sign an agreement for cooperation in the training of our National Police Service, and we will develop a detailed action and activity plan to ensure that we leverage the extensive experience of the United Kingdom to assist Kenya in enhancing its policing capabilities,” he said.

Tugendhat stated that the purpose of the agreement was to protect the citizens of both nations, who face similar threats.

“It involves examining the challenges we all face. Because, in reality, the isolation of the past no longer exists.

“The challenges that the region faces on land, at sea, and in cyberspace challenge us both,” Tugendhat stated.
The Kenya-United Kingdom Security Agreement began in 2015 and was renewed in 2018.

The National Police Service (NPS) will also receive training from the United Kingdom (UK) as part of the ministry’s response to evolving security concerns in the region.

Principal Secretaries (PS) Raymond Omollo and Julius Bitok, along with UK High Commissioner Jane Marriott, joined him.

Previously, the United Kingdom collaborated with the Kenyan security sector to train the marine commando unit.
