KMPDU lamented that the Ministry of Labor’s conciliation process to address their grievances had failed to produce results.

Davji Bhimji, secretary-general of the KMPDU, stated that the delay calls into question the commitment of their employers to meet their demands.

Despite a commitment made by the Ministry of Health on January 4, 360 interns have not been posted since December, according to the union.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) has threatened to call a strike due to the government’s failure to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for 2017-2021.

All of the issues raised by the union remain unresolved, lamenting the failure of the Ministry of Labour’s conciliation process to address their grievances.

In a statement to newsrooms, Davji Bhimji, secretary-general of the KMPDU. Questioned the commitment of their employers to meet their demands.

“Despite ample time being granted and significant restraint by the union, all matters raised in our Notice of November 28, 2021, remain unresolved, calling into question the seriousness of the employers in resolving the issues that primarily stem from the Collective Bargaining Agreements of June 30, 2017, and July 6, 2017,” said Davji.

    Unresolved demands

Despite a promise made by the Ministry of Health during a high-level meeting on January 4. 360 interns have not been posted since December, according to the union.

Davji stated that they had also agreed that medical interns would be posted. And compensated accordingly, but no payment commitment has been made as of yet.

The leader of the KMPDU stated that, according to the 2017-2021 CBA. The basic salary compensation must be resolved within 60 days of January 4, but this has not yet occurred.

In addition, he stated that the 2021-2025 CBA negotiations had not yet begun. Despite being scheduled for February of this year.

“Our position is that, since the conciliation has failed to produce any results to date, it is untenable and a waste of resources. Unless a case is made for our continued participation in this process, we will consider the dispute unresolved under Section 69 and move that our industrial action be sanctioned by the Court in Nairobi,” Davji stated.

The union also demanded the employment of medical professionals. The provision of adequate and standard PPEs and medication in all healthcare facilities. Post-graduate training, and the promotion of physicians to the appropriate job groups.

Other concerns included the provision of comprehensive medical insurance for all physicians and salary delays.
