CS Kindiki Urges Better Salaries for Journalists
Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki called for a review of the terms of payment for Kenyan journalists.
Prof. Kindiki, speaking in honor of World Freedom Day, stated that thousands of journalists continue to highlight issues affecting society daily, “but lack even basic human provisions due to low pay and indifferent media sector actors who accept this as normal.”
“It is presumptuous of us to expect an independent media and unbiased reporting from reporters when journalists go unpaid for months and others are unable to support themselves due to low pay,” he said.
Kindiki urged media owners to provide journalists with compensation commensurate with their daily workload and the current cost of living.

“There must be equal pay for an equal day,” he continued.
At the same time, the Interior Cabinet Secretary acknowledged a risk to the safety of Kenyan journalists and vowed that his ministry will not hesitate to punish those who threaten journalists in their line of work.
“We firmly believe in an open society, and the media in our democracy exemplifies this openness. “We will punish those who threaten the safety of journalists in their line of work, both online and offline,” he said.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. To raise awareness of the significance of press freedom. And to remind governments of their responsibility to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the right to freedom of expression.
This year’s theme is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as the driving force behind all other human rights.”
