Ugandan Minister Charles Okello Killed by Bodyguard

Tuesday, his bodyguard shot and killed Ugandan minister Col. (Ret.) Charles Okello Engola in his Kyanja residence.

Fred Enanga, Uganda’s police spokesman, confirmed the incident, stating that the State Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations was killed around 8 a.m. as he prepared to report for duty.

The bodyguard, who has since been identified as Pte Wilson Sabiti, reportedly fired more than 20 rounds of ammunition into the air while yelling, “How can I work for a whole minister and still be broke?”

Enanga, a police spokesperson, confirmed that Pte Sabiti later committed suicide, adding that investigations into the incident have since begun.

The deceased minister’s assistant, Ronald Otim, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

“We can confirm that one of Charles Okello Engola’s bodyguards shot and killed him this morning.” “The bodyguard later committed suicide as well,” said Mr. Enanga.

“However, we have launched an investigation to determine the murder’s motive. “The city mortuary will autopsy the minister’s body.”

Thomas Tayebwa, the vice-speaker of the Parliament, visited the scene and deemed the situation regrettable, urging the relevant security agencies to investigate it thoroughly.

“This morning’s tragic shooting of our colleague, State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, Hon. Col. (Ret.) Charles Okello Engola, by his bodyguard, is very disturbing,” he said.

“I visited the family in Kyanja to convey my condolences and those of the Parliament. The police and other security agencies are investigating the motive behind this heinous murder.

The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) issued a brief statement confirming the death and announcing the initiation of parallel investigations.

“We have learned of the tragic incident on the Kyanja ring road that resulted in the death of Colonel Charles Okello Engola this morning. We will inform the public as we investigate this matter jointly,” read the statement.
