Paul Mackenzie Re-Arrested After Release on Bail: Reasons Explained

Paul Mackenzie, a cultic pastor, was re-arrested on Tuesday, May 2, after being temporarily released by a Malindi court.

Pastor detained and scheduled to face terrorism charges at Shanzu High Court in Kilifi County.
In addition, prosecutors sought Mackenzie’s detention for three months while the Shakahola massacre investigation continues.

Six suspects who were apprehended alongside the controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie were also unconditionally released.

On Monday, May 6, 2019, Paul Mackenzie Nthenge will appear before the chief magistrate’s court in Malindi.

In a ruling delivered at the Malindi Law Courts, the Magistrate stated that the eighth and tenth suspects had already been detained for a maximum of ten days since their arrest on April 17.

In addition, the court noted that the first and seventh suspects had requested anticipatory bail, which could only be granted by the High Court, resulting in their release.

“This court lacks the authority to grant formal anticipatory bail because there is no formal request to hold the suspects. The High Court currently administers anticipatory bail.

“Once arraigned, the specialized court will hear all bail applications. This file is therefore closed. “The suspects are free to leave unless they are again detained for other reasons,” the judge ordered.

On Monday, April 24, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome disclosed that the controversial pastor had a criminal record dating back to 2017 when he was linked to allegations of radical teachings that caused students to skip school.

Mackenzie denied the charges during his 2018 trial and was released on a Ksh500,000 bond.

On March 17, 2023, he was arrested once more after some of his congregants allegedly starved to death on his orders.

According to our records, Mackenzie has a criminal history dating back to 2017. The most recent report date was March 17, 2023. The report linked him to the deaths of two children.

“After presenting himself to police on April 14, 2023, he was re-arrested. He was subsequently arraigned on April 17, 2023. “A 14-day detention order was issued to allow the police to complete their investigations,” Koome explained.

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) flagged Mackenzie in 2019 for broadcasting unauthorized content on his television station.

In addition, Chief Justice Martha Koome stated on April 27 that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was examining the criminal history of the pastor to determine if any misconduct occurred on the part of Judicial Officers and staff who handled the case.

On Thursday, April 27, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) initiated investigations into all Judiciary personnel who handled the controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie’s court cases.
