Amina Mohamed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, was among the UN officials and other leaders who met with President William Ruto on May 1 to discuss a solution to the Sudan crisis.

State House noted in a statement that the high-level meeting, chaired by Ruto, was held both virtually and in person.

Ruto reported on the progress of conflict resolution in Sudan, noting that the warring parties had rejected the international community’s and leadership’s call for a cessation of hostilities.

He added that the people of Sudan required humanitarian assistance because they lacked sufficient food and water.

In addition, he stated that the number of people displaced by the war continued to rise at an alarming rate, forcing many to flee to other countries.

“The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has reached cataclysmic proportions.” The protagonists have disregarded the cease-fire requests of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union, and the international community.

“As a result, water, food, and medicines are scarce. Ruto stated that the number of internally displaced people continues to rise as more flee to neighboring countries.

The president noted that the leaders agreed to find ways to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan, with or without a ceasefire.

The former prime minister of Sudan, Abdallah Hamdok, and the chair of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, were also present at the meeting.

Martin Griffiths, UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and Daniel O’Malley, International Committee of the Red Cross, also attended the meeting.

Earlier on Friday, April 21, Ruto offered to host mediation talks between warring factions in the Sudan conflict, urging the factions of General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to seize the opportunity to resolve their differences.

“To support further progress in the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan, Kenya hereby offers to host a mediation process between the parties to the agreement,” Ruto declared.

In addition, he urged the international community to support the process, which he noted was also affecting neighboring nations.

The government assured Kenyans in Sudan that it would provide assistance and evacuate those who wished to return home, launching a helpline for emergency calls at +249 900 194 848.
