Meru: Politician Under Police Protection Killed in Gunfight
Former Meru County Assembly member George Kaliunga was shot and killed on April 30 during an exchange of gunfire between police officers and suspected thieves.
Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) of Igembe North William Letting confirmed that the politician and the officers were ambushed while pursuing suspected bandits who stole 71 goats belonging to the former MCA.
According to Letting, Kaliunga and the officers were on the trail of the thieves, following their footprints as they drove the stolen livestock toward Kinna, Isiolo, by following the thieves’ footprints.
Nevertheless, the politician was shot when the suspects ambushed them, resulting in a firefight between the two groups.
“Livestock was stolen in Malaene, and the footprints of the thieves and their herd led to Kinna.”As they followed the footprints, the criminals ambushed them, shooting the former MCA. Our officers are actively searching for criminals,” explained Letting.
In addition, Antubetwe Kiongo MCA Nkunja Maore recounted the incident. Stating that he was a member of the search team dispatched to recover the cattle.

Saturday night, the cattle were stolen, and the locals began their pursuit immediately. We joined them in the morning, along with the police. But the criminals ambushed and killed Balala (George Kaliunga) in the process,” he explained.
Member of Parliament for Igembe North, Julius Taitumu, responded to the incident. By noting that he had raised concerns about insecurity in the area. When President William Ruto visited the region to launch the rehabilitation of the Kaelo-Kamukunji-Mutuati Road.
“I am deeply distressed by the tragic news of Kaliunga’s death, a respected member of the community.
“The increase in banditry in our region is cause for concern. “We must all work together to address this issue and ensure the safety of our citizens,” he stated.
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza expressed his condolences to the family and urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to intervene and put an end to the raids in the region.
