Tanzania: Harnessing Geographical Advantage for Economic Growth

Let me beat the drums for Geography today.

Indeed, it is life. With a projected economic growth rate of 5.6% for 2023, Tanzania will be the third fastest-growing economy in Africa.

It has much to do with geography, which is one of the open secrets.

Tanzania’s emphasis on infrastructure development has been a significant factor in the country’s economic expansion.

This has included investments in roads, railroads, and ports, which have improved the nation’s connectivity and made it easier for businesses to operate.

Tanzania has implemented business-friendly policies for a variety of industries, including agriculture, tourism, minerals, oil, gas, merchandising, and transportation, among others.

Tanzania’s strategic geographical location is another factor contributing to its economic growth.

We, as a nation, are the beating heart of East Africa. The country has access to the East African and Southern African markets as a result of its ideal geographic location and infrastructure.

From a geographical standpoint, all roads, railways, and ports are developed around geographical features like rivers, mountains, and coastlines.

Geography influences the location of our natural resources, cities, towns, and other human settlements, and environmental issues.

Geographical factors influence patterns of human migration.

It has a lot to do with geography that we live in a certain location due to economic opportunities.

Consider Mt. Kilimanjaro and other diverse tourist attractions in our dear homeland; the vast majority are based on geographical characteristics.

Even though someone is cultivating maize rather than coffee, this is largely due to geographical factors.

Agriculture and food production systems are influenced by a variety of geographical factors, including climate, soil quality, and water availability.

Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, are dependent on geographical factors such as sunlight and wind availability.

Every Tanzanian should take geography seriously and appreciate its influence on the nation’s economic, social, and environmental systems.

Geography is a crucial subject that can assist Tanzanians in gaining a better understanding of their country and the world.

Unfortunately, some parents discourage their children from majoring in geography at the university because they do not see clear career paths in civil service or business that begin with the title “geographer,” as opposed to fields such as medicine or engineering where the titles “Dr.” or “Engineer” make career paths clear.

However, this narrow-minded view overlooks the versatility and value of geography as a field of study; the study of geography possesses a guaranteed characteristic.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing are required for civil, environmental, and transportation engineering today.

Geography is a valuable management tool that Tanzanians tasked with managing our natural resources must be familiar with.

Geographical knowledge is essential for ensuring the long-term viability of national resources and fostering economic growth and social well-being in Tanzania.

How can we manage watersheds and river systems in the absence of geographic knowledge?

What about land management systems for the nation’s agricultural resources?

What geographic knowledge of Tanzania’s natural resources is required for the management of our energy resources – natural gas, coal, and hydropower?

Stable economic growth and sustainable development in Tanzania, as a result of a comprehensive understanding of geography, should be regarded as crucial on all levels.

Geography plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s economic, social, and environmental systems; therefore, a thorough understanding of these systems is essential for promoting the nation’s and its people’s long-term sustainable development.
