Atwoli Calls for Changes to Retired Presidents’ Roles, Criticizes Uhuru

Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), proposed a constitutional amendment to rein in former President Uhuru Kenyatta on April 7.

Atwoli, speaking to COTU members, opined that the 2010 Constitution should be amended to assign a specific role to Uhuru and other presidents whose 10-year terms expire.

The unionist advocated for the Peacemaker position, which he insisted should be a constitutional requirement.

“However, recall that in 2017 I forewarned that Uhuru’s retirement would cause numerous issues. I stated that he has a substantial amount of wealth and cannot afford to do anything.

“Once he has served as president for ten years, he should become a peacemaker, according to this constitution. This should be included in the Constitution, according to Atwoli.

At the same time, Atwoli disclosed that he was under pressure from multiple leaders to mediate between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In response to their inquiries, Atwoli stated that Uhuru would have handled the situation more effectively if he had been apolitical.

Thus, he challenged Uhuru to refrain from being dragged into Jubilee Party infighting and to cease all political activities.

“I strongly urge our retired President to be a peacemaker. If you had asked me to serve as a mediator between Raila and Ruto, it would have been Uhuru Kenyatta.” Atwoli stated.

“Because a retired president is no longer required to take sides. You are expected to be a peacemaker in your country and abroad,” he said. Criticizing the former President for siding with Raila Odinga of Azimio La Umoja.

What Uhuru Said Regarding Jubilee Conflicts

Uhuru made an impromptu visit to the Kileleshwa headquarters of the Jubilee Party. On April 26 and criticized its deviant members for causing chaos.

“Anyone who desires to leave a party is free to join another. We have no disagreements with anybody. “Those who do not wish to protect our party are free to leave,” he added.

“Let us maintain peace. Police officers have more important things to do than come here to restore order. We have no disagreements with anyone; our mission is to maintain peace,” he added.

The nominated MP Sabina Chege echoed his sentiments and urged him to convene a crisis meeting to resolve the dispute between the various parties.

Saturday, April 29th, Uhuru called for a National Delegates Conference (NDC) at the Bomas of Kenya to chart the way forward.
