Texas High School Prom Party Shooting Injures Nine

Nine teenagers were shot early Sunday morning at an after-prom party in Jasper, Texas. It prompting an increased police presence at the high school this week, according to officials.

None of the gunshot wounds were life-threatening, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Jasper is a town of approximately 7,200 people located 134 miles (215 kilometers) northeast of Houston.

The victims were transported to two hospitals, according to the sheriff’s office, which did not disclose the number of shooters.

“This investigation is ongoing, and people of interest are being questioned,” the statement said.

The ages of the victims ranged from 15 to 19, according to KBMT-KJAC television news.

The television news reported that Jasper High School held its prom, a rite of passage for American secondary schools, in a church meeting hall on Saturday night.

John Seybold, superintendent of the Jasper Independent School District, promised full cooperation with any law enforcement investigation “to bring these perpetrators to justice.”

Local media reported Seybold’s statement as follows: “There will be a much larger law enforcement presence this week. To ensure student safety, as well as counselors available for any students who require assistance.”

At an Alabama “Sweet 16” birthday party in the small town of Dadeville a week ago, four people were shot dead and 32 were injured.

This shooting has resulted in murder charges against five suspects.

Last year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that firearms have surpassed motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the United States.
