Uganda: Court Schedules Hearing for alleged lesbian teacher case

The deputy head teacher of PMM Girls’ SS is accused of gross indecency as well as the procurement of gross indecency in a case that will be heard in the Jinja Magistrate’s Court on May 4.

This date has been set as the date on which the case will be heard.

Ms. Lydia Mukodha and Ms. Martha Naigaga, who is suspected of being Ms. Mukodha’s lesbian partner, were both taken into custody on March 3, after parents stormed the school in response to allegations that the two were encouraging lesbianism.

Ms. Agnes Musiime, the Grade One Magistrate in Jinja, set the hearing date on Thursday as the two suspects appeared before the court at the same time.

The attorney for the prosecution, Ms. Florence Kataike, informed the court that all of the investigations into the case has been concluded.

“Prosecution is ready to proceed, investigations are complete. We have collected all of the necessary materials and evidence to start hearing the case,” she stated.

On April 4, Ms. Musiime rejected a bail application. It had been submitted by Ms. Mukodha through her attorney, Mr. Robert Esarait.

The application was based on the argument that the two individuals would not be safe living in the community.

Additionally, the prosecution argues that if Ms. Mukodha is given bail, she would potentially tamper with key witnesses.

The individuals under suspicion are currently being held in remand at the Kirinya Prison.
