No longer serving as the British High Commissioner to Kenya is Jane Marriott. This occurred after the British government fired and replaced her.

Yesterday, the United Kingdom announced the appointment of Neil Wigan OBE as its next High Commissioner to Kenya, succeeding Jane Marriott, who will be leaving in June.

The statement continued by stating that Marriott will embark on another diplomatic mission.

“Mr. Neil Wigan OBE has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, succeeding Ms. Jane Marriott, who will transfer to a new Diplomatic Service position.

“Wigan will assume his position in July 2023,” read a portion of the statement.

While confirming the news, Marriot expressed gratitude for the support she received from Kenyans during her tenure. In addition, she urged Kenyans to support her replacement.

“My time in Kenya will end in June after four incredible years; I will miss Kenya and Kenyans terribly. Be sure to follow my successor and stay tuned for more information regarding our joint accomplishments. Tufaulu pamoja (together we will succeed),” she stated.

In 2019, Marriott succeeded Nic Hailey as Kenya’s ambassador.

However, she became embroiled in controversy in 2022 when Azimio Chief Raila Odinga accused her of conspiring with then-IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati and others to rig his victory in favor of President William Ruto.

It is unclear whether Raila’s claims had any bearing on her dismissal.
