FKF President Discloses Exact Amount Paid to Harambee Stars Players

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has disclosed the money Harambee Stars players received in allowances and bonuses over the past two months.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Hussein confirmed that both the players and the technical bench were well compensated.

โ€œWhatever the team gets is the effort of the federation; the federation does everything in its power to make sure that we remunerate the team well,โ€ he said.

According to Hussein, the squad that featured in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) had 27 players, even though the government only catered for 24. โ€œYouโ€™ve got the allowances of the players and the technical team, 27 players, although the government pays for 24, and we cater for the balance,โ€ he explained.

He revealed that the allowances paid to the national team in July and August added up to about Ksh21 million. โ€œThose allowances that we have paid to the national team, plus other bonuses that could have been given, you are looking at about Ksh21 million that has been paid to the players through allowances,โ€ Hussein said.

In addition to FKF payments, Hussein confirmed that President William Ruto awarded the team a bonus of Ksh232 million. He clarified that July allowances were settled while the team was in camp and August payments had been processed up to the day before his announcement.

โ€œAllowances were paid in July when in camp and August up to yesterday. Then there is the money that was given as bonuses by the President,โ€ he said.

This brings the total amount disbursed to Harambee Stars players and technical staff to approximately Ksh253 million. However, since this amount covers both the players and the technical bench, the actual per-player share is lower.

Hussein also addressed claims of external influence in player selection, assuring Kenyans that head coach Benni McCarthy has full independence to pick players purely on merit.

On Monday, August 11, President Ruto promised each player and technical staff member Ksh2.5 million if the team defeated Zambia โ€” which they did โ€” in their final group match on Sunday, August 17.

Ruto also pledged Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom Affordable Housing unit for every player if the team advanced to the quarter-finals, alongside an earlier commitment of Ksh60 million for reaching that stage of the tournament.
