Woman in Mlolongo Throws Daughters from Sixth Floor, One Dies

A 30-year-old woman has been admitted to hospital after allegedly killing her nine-year-old daughter in a shocking murder-suicide attempt in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the woman threw her daughter from the sixth floor of their apartment on Thursday evening, August 21, leading to the childโ€™s death. She also injured her second daughter, who fell from the same spot.

Police said the woman later tried to end her own life by jumping from the same floor but survived with serious injuries. The motive behind the incident is still unknown.

Tenants at the apartment said Mueni went to the rooftop with her two daughters before pushing the older child first, who died instantly after hitting the ground. The woman and her four-year-old daughter were rescued and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The body of the deceased girl was taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue. Police confirmed the woman is being treated under guard and will face charges of murder and attempted murder once stable.

Rising Cases of Suicide in Kenya

Police have raised concerns about the increasing cases of suicide in the country, with up to two incidents reported daily.

The World Health Organisation links the trend to challenges such as unemployment, grief, academic stress, financial difficulties, and legal problems. Other contributing factors include bullying, alcoholism, substance abuse, depression, bipolar disorder, and family history of suicide.
