Former Chief Justice Maraga Issues Demand to IEBC Over Registration of Voters
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to immediately restart voter registration across the country.
In his statement on Friday, August 22, Maraga reminded the commission that the constitution requires continuous voter registration. He accused IEBC of violating the law by locking out young Kenyans who have recently turned 18 from registering as voters.
โSince 2022, IEBC has suspended this process, giving frivolous excuses while blatantly violating the Katiba and disenfranchising millions of youth who have attained the age of 18.
โThe Commission cannot continue picking and choosing which of its constitutional duties to undertake based on political patronage,โ Maraga stated.
The retired Chief Justice further insisted that IEBC should not only resume the process but also roll out a nationwide voter registration campaign.
โWe demand that the IEBC immediately commence the continuous voter registration process and conduct a mass voter registration campaign,โ Maraga added.

He also urged the Registrar of Persons to speed up the issuance of national ID cards to all youth who have reached the legal voting age.
On July 21, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon assured Kenyans that the commission would announce timelines for the return of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in August 2025.
Ethekon confirmed that internal preparations were almost done and that a gazette notice would provide the official dates.
“The IEBC is currently finalizing internal processes and will, in the month of August 2025, announce via a gazette notice the timelines for resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to allow eligible citizens of Kenya to register as voters,โ said the IEBC chairperson.
Currently, to register as a voter in Kenya, one must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 or above, hold a valid national ID card or Kenyan passport, and must not have any election-related convictions within the last five years.
