Senator Methu: 200 police officers were deployed at JKIA to arrest Gachagua
Nyandarua Senator Methu Muhia has alleged that at least 200 police officers were deployed to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to arrest Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking on Thursday, August 21, 2025, during a stopover near Ole Sereni, Methu said the plan to arrest Gachagua failed after hundreds of his supporters gathered at the airport to protect him.
โI want to thank the people of Nairobi for standing firm. At JKIA, more than 200 police officers had been deployed to arrest Rigathi Gachagua, but you resisted as his loyal supporters,โ the senator told the crowd.
Rising Arrest Threats
This comes just days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned that Gachagua would be arrested over remarks he made in the US, accusing the Kenyan government of colluding with Al Shabaab.
Murkomen also claimed the country had enjoyed relative calm during Gachaguaโs absence.

โMany people fly into Kenya every day; why should one person cause worry?โ Murkomen asked, adding, โFor the past few weeks he has been away, Kenya has been very peaceful.โ
Police on High Alert
The CS further revealed that security agencies had been placed on standby ahead of Gachaguaโs return, which was expected on Thursday.
โPerhaps security should be ready for chaos when he arrives,โ Murkomen noted. โI wish Kenya remained as peaceful as it has been in the last four weeks.โ
Chaos on Mombasa Road
After landing, Gachaguaโs convoy heading to Nairobiโs city center was attacked by goons along Mombasa Road. Police later dispersed the attackers using teargas.
Several vehicles, including those belonging to journalists and political leaders who had joined the convoy, were vandalized. A number of journalists sustained injuries, and some of their equipment was destroyed during the violence.
