“MPs receive money from Farouk Kibet”: Cleophas Malala

Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, has alleged that Members of Parliament (MPs) receive huge sums of money from President William Ruto’s close aide, Farouk Kibet, whenever they attend empowerment programs at State House.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Malala claimed MPs are handed up to Ksh300,000 each, money said to be meant for public projects. However, he accused the lawmakers of pocketing most of it instead of using it for development.

According to Malala, the MPs keep Ksh200,000 for themselves and only give out Ksh100,000 during the programs. He even claimed to have personally seen Uriri MP Mark Nyamita receive cash from Farouk Kibet.

“When MPs attend empowerment programs, they are given Ksh300,000. Out of that, they keep Ksh200,000 for themselves and only contribute Ksh100,000. I have witnessed MP Mark Nyamita being given money by Farouk,” Malala said.

    Cherargei Defends President Ruto

Malala’s remarks sparked a heated exchange with Senate Majority Leader Samson Cherargei, who strongly defended President William Ruto against the corruption claims.

Cherargei dismissed the allegations as false and politically motivated, insisting that Ruto has never engaged in direct lobbying of MPs.

“President William Ruto has never engaged in direct lobbying. Malala is only chasing cheap political points,” Cherargei argued.

The Nandi Senator accused Malala of playing cheap politics meant to weaken the government’s image. He went on to compare Malala’s political conduct to that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was previously impeached for making divisive remarks.

“People now see why the former Deputy President was impeached. He constantly undermined the country and promoted negative ethnicity,” Cherargei said.

Malala Questions Ruto’s Reaction to Anti-Money Laundering Bill

Malala, however, stood his ground and went further to question President Ruto’s behaviour over the Anti-Money Laundering Bill. He argued that the Head of State appeared “too agitated,” suggesting that the President had a personal interest in the bill.

“Why was the President so agitated about one particular bill, the Anti-Money Laundering Bill? It’s because he is a person of interest,” Malala alleged.

He also claimed Ruto seemed to know details about bribery linked to the bill, including who was supposed to deliver the money and who was set to receive it.

“His issue is not that there was bribery involved, but that the money never reached where it was supposed to go,” Malala added.
