Matiang’i Defends Gachagua in Scathing Speech Against Ruto Govt

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has thrown his weight behind Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, defending his explosive claims of grand theft within the Kenya Kwanza government.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with opposition leaders ahead of Gachagua’s return, Matiang’i argued that the former Deputy President was being unfairly targeted. He insisted that the issues Gachagua raised were not only valid but also supported by international reports.

“What we are witnessing is not just corruption—it is outright looting. Billions are being stolen in broad daylight while we remain silent. When leaders like Gachagua expose the truth, the government responds with threats of arrest,” Matiang’i said.

The former CS also pointed to reports alleging that Kenya was involved in the sale of arms to neighboring Sudan. He claimed the government’s silence on the matter only raised more suspicion.

Matiang’i further criticized authorities for intimidating Gachagua, stating:

“When Rigathi speaks, suddenly it becomes a criminal issue. They must stop assuming Kenyans are foolish. These are the same leaders who once told us there are no fools left in this country.”

Calling on Kenyans to resist the “looting regime,” Matiang’i warned that unchecked plunder could destroy the nation.

“Some economies survive corruption, but none can survive looting,” he cautioned.

Gachagua, who is currently facing threats of arrest, recently made damning allegations during his U.S. trip. He accused the Kenya Kwanza government of misusing public funds and even claimed that President William Ruto met three Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera—a statement that drew sharp backlash.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has since ordered Gachagua to record a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) once he returns to the country. However, Gachagua has openly refused, instead announcing that he will cut short his trip and return home to prepare for the November 27 by-elections. He is expected back in Kenya on Thursday, August 21.
