How Ruto is Manipulating Senate Ahead of Kericho Governor’s Impeachment – UDA Senator

Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has accused President William Ruto of trying to influence the Senate ahead of the impeachment hearings against Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 19, Thang’wa said Ruto’s recent remarks about senators taking bribes during impeachment cases were meant to set up political control rather than fight corruption.

“By shouting that senators are bribed, the President isn’t exposing corruption. He’s preparing the ground to manipulate public opinion. We all know money has exchanged hands before, but why bring it up now, just when the Senate is about to hear Governor Mutai’s case?” Thang’wa questioned.

The senator argued that Ruto was creating a win-win narrative for State House.

“If we impeach, he takes credit. If we don’t, he claims senators were bought. That’s not fighting graft—it’s using the truth for political convenience,” he added.

Thang’wa urged the President to stop intimidating independent institutions.

“Mr. President, stop trying to blackmail the Senate. We will not be bullied by your pre-planned tactics,” he said.

Ruto Hits Back With Graft Claims in Parliament

Speaking a day earlier during a joint Kenya Kwanza–ODM meeting on August 18, President Ruto accused senators of turning impeachment and oversight sessions into a “marketplace.” He claimed some governors were forced to pay up to Ksh150 million to avoid removal from office.

“I receive raw intelligence daily. In the Senate, impeachment sessions are nicknamed soko huru (open market). Where does a governor even get Ksh150 million? Isn’t that county money?” Ruto asked.

The President also accused members of the National Assembly of engaging in bribery. He claimed some MPs pocketed Ksh10 million each to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.

“There are people destroying the credibility of Parliament. They collect bribes in the name of the House, but the money ends up in a few pockets. We are not going to shame them—we will arrest them. Both those giving and receiving bribes will face the law,” Ruto warned.
