Senate Sets Special Sitting to Hear Governor Mutai’s Ouster Case

The Senate has announced a Special Sitting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to debate the impeachment of Kericho Governor Eric K. Mutai.

In a notice dated August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the session will take place at 2:30 p.m. inside the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi.

The decision follows an official letter from Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, received by the Senate on Monday. The letter outlined the Assemblyโ€™s resolution of August 15 to remove Governor Mutai from office, citing serious accusations such as:

    • Misuse of public and donor funds
    • Abuse of office
    • Approving illegal payments to contractors

According to the County Assembly, all 33 MCAs voted in favor of the motion after a tense sitting where the governor defended himself vigorously. This was the second impeachment attempt against him.

The motion was introduced by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who accused Mutai of overseeing the irregular release of Sh85 million to contractors for incomplete or ghost projects.

Governor Mutai has denied the claims, calling them politically motivated attacks.

Besides the impeachment debate, the Senate will also conduct the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as the new Senator, a key highlight of the sitting.

Under Kenyan law, the Senate will now decide whether to uphold or reject the County Assemblyโ€™s impeachment vote. If the decision is upheld, Governor Mutai will officially lose his seat.

This ruling is expected to shape Kericho Countyโ€™s political future and could influence national politics, as it highlights the growing role of County Assemblies in demanding accountability from governors.
