Malala Warns of Chaos at CHAN if Govt Arrests Gachagua

Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala has cautioned the government against arresting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying his supporters could stage mass protests during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking to Radio Citizen on Monday, August 18, Malala warned that chaos could erupt on Friday, possibly disrupting fans from attending the CHAN quarter-finals at Kasarani Stadium.

According to him, detaining Gachagua while Kenya is hosting an international football tournament would damage President William Rutoโ€™s image before the global audience.

โ€œIf Gachagua is arrested today, tomorrow you will see demonstrations. The Harambee Stars are playing on Friday, but I can assure you fans wonโ€™t even access the stadium if he is in custody,โ€ Malala said.

He added that such a move would paralyze major roads like Thika Road, making it impossible for Kenyans to watch the games.

Malala also criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for demanding a statement from Gachagua over his recent explosive claims. He argued that the former DP could instead present his statement before the Senate or even at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

โ€œGachagua is being threatened with arrest for exposing meetings between some government officials, RFT and Al-Shabaab. These claims are true, and evidence exists. If they want a statement, he will deliver it either in the Senate or at the ICC,โ€ Malala insisted.

Murkomen, however, dismissed Gachaguaโ€™s allegations in a press briefing on Monday, August 11, confirming that the former DP would be required to record a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) once he lands back in Kenya.

The CS further urged Kenyans not to share Gachaguaโ€™s videos on social media, warning that they could destabilize the countryโ€™s political and security environment.

Meanwhile, Gachagua announced on Thursday, August 14, that he had cut short his US trip to prepare for the upcoming by-elections. He is expected to jet back into the country on Thursday, August 21.

โ€œI had a successful and fulfilling visit to the United States where I met Kenyans in the diaspora. However, I had to cancel the remaining part of the trip to return home and support our party, DCP, ahead of the upcoming by-elections,โ€ Gachagua said in a statement.

Malala has since assured supporters that they will turn up in large numbers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome the former DP.
