Senator Tabitha Mutinda Responds to Claims of Receiving Ksh 10 Million to Oust Rigathi Gachagua

Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda has dismissed allegations that lawmakers were bribed with KSh 10 million each to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TVโ€™s DayBreak, Senator Mutinda was put on the spot by Murangโ€™a Senator Joe Nyutu, who claimed she accepted the money. Mutinda, however, strongly refuted the accusation and told Nyutu to โ€œmanage his frustrationsโ€ instead of dragging her into baseless claims.

Nyutu alleged that every senator, himself included, was offered Ksh 10 million to support Gachaguaโ€™s impeachment, insisting that Tabitha took the payout while he rejected it.

โ€œThe issue of bribery and the Ksh 10 millionโ€ฆ let Senator Tabitha swear before God and Kenyans today that she never received it,โ€ Nyutu challenged during the live show.

In her response, Mutinda stood firm:
โ€œDid you give me anything? It is so sad. I never received a single cent to impeach Gachagua. Please manage your frustrations and move forward.โ€

She further noted that the impeachment is already concluded and should be left in the past.

Nyutuโ€™s remarks echoed Rigathi Gachaguaโ€™s earlier claims in September 2024, when he alleged that senators and MPs were offered Ksh 5 million each to vote for his removal. Speaking at a rally in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Gachagua said some of his allies, including Woman Rep Njeri Maina and Senator James Murango, were also approached but declined the offer.

On October 17, 2024, the Senate officially impeached Gachagua after a two-day hearing. Senators upheld five out of the 11 charges presented, sealing his removal from office.
