Kenya’s President Ruto Mourns Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
Kenya’s President William Ruto has joined other African leaders in mourning the death of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.
In a statement released Monday, President Ruto described Buhari’s death as a significant loss not just for Nigeria, but for the entire African continent. He praised Buhari for his lifelong service to the region, especially his work in promoting peace, fighting corruption, and pushing for African unity.
“On behalf of the Government and People of Kenya, I send our deepest condolences to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of Nigeria on the passing of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Ruto said.
He hailed Buhari as a wise and dedicated leader who played a key role in strengthening regional security, economic integration, and the fight against corruption across Africa.
President Ruto also recalled Buhari’s State Visit to Kenya in January 2016, calling it a turning point in the relationship between Kenya and Nigeria. He also mentioned the congratulatory message Buhari sent after Ruto’s election win in August 2022, which he said showed Buhari’s strong belief in democracy and African solidarity.

Ruto also sent personal condolences to Buhari’s family and emphasized Kenya’s commitment to continuing strong diplomatic ties with Nigeria.
Buhari, a former military general and anti-corruption crusader, passed away in London around 4:30 pm after a long illness, according to the Nigerian presidential press office.
Born in December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari trained as a soldier in Nigeria, the UK, India, and the US. He first became Nigeria’s head of state through a military coup in 1983 but was removed in another coup in 1985. Decades later, he returned as a democratically elected president, known for his tough stance on corruption and governance.
