Gachagua Addresses Holding Talks With Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made it clear that he won’t hold any talks with President William Ruto, even after Raila Odinga called for a national dialogue to address Kenya’s growing crisis.
Speaking during his U.S. tour on Saturday, July 12, Gachagua dismissed any possibility of dialogue, claiming that Ruto is a serial liar. He even joked that Ruto lies so much that some people are starting to question if his real name is actually William Ruto.
“You can’t have dialogue with Ruto—he lies all the time. In fact, we’re not even sure that’s his real name,” Gachagua said.
He went on to say that he had no interest in any talks with the president, and neither did Martha Karua, whom he referred to as “my sister.”
This came shortly after Raila Odinga, on the 35th anniversary of the Saba Saba protests (July 7), called for a national summit to address Kenya’s economic and political challenges. According to Raila, the same issues that triggered protests in the 1990s—such as joblessness, poverty, and human rights abuses—are still affecting the country today.

Raila urged leaders and citizens to come together for open discussions that could lead to positive change and economic reforms.
But Gachagua wasn’t buying it. He dismissed Raila’s idea, accusing the former Prime Minister of playing both sides—calling for reform while benefiting from being close to the government.
“Every time there’s an election, Raila loses, then finds his way into power. He wants to enjoy the benefits but avoid the responsibility,” Gachagua said.
“Now that things are getting tough, he’s trying to pretend he’s not part of the system. If he really cared about Kenya, he’d cut ties with Ruto. But instead, he’s talking while still benefiting.”
Gachagua is currently on a two-month tour in the United States, meeting with Kenyans in the diaspora and building support as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape.
